Ever wonder what happens to all the sports equipment, furniture, and other items used to furnish the various venues at major sporting events? Furniture and equipment from the olympic village and sporting venues in Paris are getting a second life courtesy of B-Stock and our partner, RGS Events (talk about supporting the circular economy on an olympic scale!).

In support of its sustainable event management initiatives, Olympic Sponsor, RGS Events – the official FF&E Project Manager of the Games – is selling over 45,000 pieces of furniture, fixtures, and equipment used to furnish the athlete apartments, olympic village, and sporting venues. The items, which include arcade games (pool tables; ping pong tables, foosball tables), chairs (desk chairs, barber chairs, office chairs), sofas, tables, and benches, among other pieces, are being sold in bulk quantities to the highest bidders and will be delivered following the Games.

In fact, as of this blog going live, the majority of items have already been purchased and will be finding a second life through four different business buyers, all located in Europe!

Here are some additional fun facts about the sale (showcasing what it takes to build a village of olympic proportions!):

  • One buyer purchased 10 full truckloads of inventory
  • 6,000 chairs – including desk chairs, barber chairs, office chairs, outside chairs, and decorative chairs – were up for grabs
  • 3,000 sofas in varying colors and sizes were sold
  • The number of belt barriers took the top spot, with close to 10,000 units available
  • Thousands of lockers were available
  • The remaining items are open for bidding at: https://bstock.com/majorsportingevent/

This partnership between B-Stock and RGS Events aims to redefine event management and sustainability practices for major sporting events and reflects both companies’ commitment to reducing waste and promoting a second life for goods. Fun fact: in the first half of 2024 B-Stock has sold over 350 million items via our recommerce platform, preventing over 700 tons of inventory from going into the landfill.

Here’s what our two companies had to say:

“We are proud to partner with RGS Events to give our business buyers around the globe the opportunity to secure a piece of history,” said Eric Moriarty, Vice President of Account Management at B-Stock. “This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration in advancing sustainability initiatives. Together, we can maximize the value of surplus inventory and minimize waste, contributing to a more sustainable future.”

“This collaboration allows us to not only deliver a memorable event but also to promote sustainability and responsible consumption. By giving our furniture and equipment a second life through B-Stock, we are contributing to a more circular economy,” said Elliot Ramler, Head of Commercial of RGS Events.

The furniture and equipment is being sold through B-Stock’s multiple secondary market sales channels, including an online auction storefront: https://bstock.com/majorsportingevent/.

"I feel so confident shopping and bidding on items knowing that I am going to get what I paid for. And if not, there’s a killer customer service team that’s going to make sure everything’s alright in the end. That’s huge. It’s hard to take that risk when you’re first starting out."
